Davis Ovard - 2024 North and South Men's Amateur Champion
July 15th, 2024 | 49 mins 15 secs
amateur golf, baylor, davis ovard, elite amateur golf series, golf podcast, jackson van paris, mike mcgraw, north and south amateur, pinehurst
My guest on this episode is the new North and South Men's Amateur Champion, Davis Ovard. This might be one of the more fascinating wins in amateur golf this year. Davis is a rising sophomore at Baylor, so naturally we spoke about his freshman season that included a run to the National Championship. We also spoke about his start in the game and how golf has become a "family affair" for the Ovards. But what makes his win so interesting is the opponent he faced in the championship match, Jackson Van Paris. Jackson is a Pinehurst native, as many of you know.....so it seemed that the storybook ending was already written well ahead of time.....except nobody bothered to tell Davis Ovard, which might explain how he came away with a 2&1 win to claim the Putter Boy trophy.

The native Floridian just might be the hottest golfer of the spring, picking up three consecutive wins at the Seminole Intercollegiate, the Valspar Collegiate, and at UVA's home tournament....the Lewis Chitengwa Memorial. Luke was one of those mega stars of junior golf that represented the United States at Junior President's Cup. He won the Azalea Am and the North and South....before he entered college. So how did he handle the expectations heading to Tallahassee as a freshman.....well, we got into that.
